Long-term Multivitamin Use in Women Reduces the Risk of Heart Attack

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the association between multivitamin use and myocardial infarction (MI) in a large population of women.

The study included 31,671 Swedish women with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 2,262 women with a history of CVD aged 49–83 years. At the beginning of the study, the women completed a questionnaire regarding dietary supplement use, diet, and lifestyle factors. Multivitamins were estimated to contain nutrients close to recommended daily allowances.

During an average of 10.2 years of follow-up, 932 MI cases were identified in the CVD-free group and 269 cases in the CVD group. In the CVD-free group, use of multivitamins only, compared with no use of supplements, was associated with a 27% decreased risk of CVD. When multivitamins were used in conjunction with other supplements, the risk of CVD was decreased by 30%. In those that used only supplements other than multivitamins the reduction in risk was much smaller at only 7%. In women that used multivitamins for more than 5 years there was a 41% reduction in risk of CVD.

This research showed that the use of multivitamins was inversely associated with MI, especially among long-term users with no history of CVD.

Pregnancy and Low Glycemic Diets ….

During Pregnancy, Low–Glycemic Diets Improve Health Outcomes in Obese Women & Their Infants

A new study shows that a low-glycemic load diet in overweight and obese pregnant women results in longer pregnancy duration, greater infant head circumference, and improved maternal cardiovascular risk factors.

Excess body weight is known to complicate pregnancies, but the optimal diet during pregnancy is currently unknown. New research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition aimed to examine the effects of a low–glycemic load (low-GL) diet in overweight and obese pregnant women.

Researchers randomly assigned 46 overweight or obese pregnant women to receive a low-GL or a low-fat diet. The women received carbohydrate-rich foods, fats, and snack foods through home delivery or study visits. Birth weight, infant body measurements, gestational duration, maternal weight gain, and maternal metabolic parameters were measured.

No significant differences in birth weight or measures of infant body fat were seen between the two groups. However, in the low-GL compared with the low-fat group, gestational duration was significantly longer and fewer deliveries occurred at less than 38.0 weeks (13% versus 48%). Adjusted head circumference was greater in the low-GL versus the low-fat group. Women in the low-GL group had smaller increases in triglycerides and total cholesterol and a greater decrease in C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation).

In this study, a low-GL diet correlated with longer pregnancy duration, greater infant head circumference, and improved maternal cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers suggest that large-scale studies may be useful in determining whether a low-GL diet may be beneficial in the prevention of prematurity and other unfavorable maternal and infant outcomes.

High Vitamin B Levels Associated With Reduced Risk of Colorectal Cancer

New research reported in the October 2010 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention shows a correlation between higher levels of vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and B6 and a reduced risk of developing colorectal cancer. B-vitamins are essential for metabolism and have been linked to a reduced risk of colorectal cancer in previous studies. Since associations with the B-vitamin folate have been studied most often, researchers in the current study focused on potential associations of other B vitamins (B2, B6, and B12) and colorectal cancer.

This European population-based study included subjects who were participants in the Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. The study included 1,365 adults diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 2,319 age and gender-matched control subjects. Blood samples were taken at enrollment and analyzed for vitamins B2, B6, and B12, as well as 8 variants of genes that relate to the function of these vitamins.

After an average follow-up of 3.6 years, individuals whose vitamin B6 levels were among the top 20 percent of participants had a 32 percent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer when compared to those whose levels were in the lowest 20 percent. Among those whose vitamin B2 levels were highest, the risk was 29 percent lower than those whose levels were lowest. There were no significant associations for vitamin B12 and colorectal cancer. Vitamin levels were lower in smokers compared to nonsmokers, and the benefits for vitamin B6 were stronger in males who consumed ≥30 g (one ounce) of alcohol per day.

This research is the first population-based study to indicate that vitamin B2 is inversely associated with colorectal cancer, and it supports previously suggested inverse associations of vitamin B6 with colorectal cancer.

Multivitamins Improve Mental Fatigue and Stress in Healthy Men

Stressed ManA major percentage of the general population reports regular use of multivitamin supplements. Among the common reasons given for doing so are helping combat mental fatigue and stress, although there are few studies that have analyzed the relationship between multivitamin supplementation and mental performance in healthy, non-elderly adults.

In a recent article published in the journal Psychopharmacology, researchers reported that multivitamin and mineral supplements taken daily for a month improved mental fatigue and stress levels in adult men.

Participants in this double-blind study included 215 healthy men between the ages of 30 and 55 who were regularly exposed to mental fatigue and stress in their full-time employment. Subjects received either a placebo or a multivitamin and mineral supplement which they took daily for 33 days. The multivitamin included moderate levels of vitamin C and the B vitamins, as well as the minerals magnesium, calcium and zinc.

Previous to and following the last day of treatment, subjects completed questionnaires that measured mood states, perceived stress, and general health. On the final day, further testing evaluated cognitive performance and task-related changes in mood and fatigue while walking on a treadmill.

When compared to the placebo group, participants receiving the multinutrient supplement experienced a significant improvement in perceived stress, general health and vigor, cognitive function, and mental fatigue.

While it isn’t possible to identify the specific mechanism of action responsible for these improvements, the results of the study support results from previous research indicating that supplementation of multivitamin/minerals in healthy, normal populations may provide beneficial effects on mental health, adaptation to stress, and cognitive function.

Even Though….

Even though you have every right to be angry, you have every reason to let it go.

For when you let go of your anger, you make more room for joy.

Even though your first impulse may be to retaliate, you’re likely to be better off when you reconcile and forgive.

After all, when you’ve been hurt, it makes no sense for you to prolong the hurt with your own attitude and actions.

Even though the world is often cruel and unfair, it does not have to get you down.

The more fully and willingly you accept what is, the more power you have to improve upon it.

Even though many things will come along that could be frustrating and annoying, you can always choose to respond with patience and with grace.

By so doing, you’ll be building strength as well as focusing your energy in a more positive and productive direction.

Even though events may not go your way, you can continue to move in the direction of your own choosing.

Success depends very little on being given what you want, and much more on becoming the best you can be.

Even though life has its setbacks, disappointments and tragedies, they pale in comparison to the new and positive possibilities that increase with each passing moment.

Choose to fully live the immeasurable blessing that is your life, and every day will move you forward.

You Have the Ability Within You

Often I have people ask me the question, ‘how do I do it?” “How do I make the changes that I need to make?”  They feel and have a sense of what they need to do, but they have no way and no belief in themselves in their ability to do so.  They will proceed to tell me all the reasons they can’t.  Rather than explain why you can’t, I invite you to find the reasons why you can.  Because I have faith in you and I know that you can.  And so I share this piece with you…………….

If you have the ability to complain about something, you also have the ability to take the positive action that will make it better.

And taking positive action is infinitely more effective than merely complaining.

If you have cause to get angry, then you also can turn the energy of that anger in a positive direction.

You can then resolve the situation in a way that is peaceful and valuable for all concerned.

If you have reason to be frustrated, you also have the motivation necessary to get beyond whatever is frustrating you.

Whether you work to eliminate the cause of your frustration or grow beyond it, no frustration ever has to continue troubling you.

If you have experienced disappointment, you also have learned a valuable lesson.

Go forward, apply what you have learned, and transform your disappointment into a positive turning point.

If you have known loss and sadness, then you also have gained a profound understanding of how very precious life is.

Take the opportunity, for which you’ve paid so dearly, to raise yourself to a whole new level of meaning and fulfillment.

If you face a difficult challenge, you also have the opportunity to grow stronger, more capable, wise, experienced and resilient.

Embrace those opportunities, for in them you will find the sweet substance of life.

Who Are You? …. What is Your Destiny?

What! You ask … what kind of headline and question is that?

It’s a very reflective one, I will answer and I challenge each of you to actually ask yourself, “Who am I?” “What do I stand for?”

I’m in a reflective mood. I’ve been in some interesting meetings recently. I’ve participated in them and I’ve watched others as they participate. I have been told by my “experts” that what I’m dealing with and going through, the people involved and what is taking place is like dealing with terrorists and as we all know, you can’t deal with terrorists! That is a harsh reality of our world today. I mean really, how do you deal with a terrorist???

Do we allow the irrational beliefs of terrorists to rule our world, to control our actions and our responses? What brought them to this point? We’re all aware of the “religious” fanatics who believe that there is only one true God and anyone who doesn’t share their beliefs are to be destroyed. Turn on your TV every night and you’ll witness this.

But what about the people that you and I meet and deal with on a day to day basis, people that are not couched in reality, people that have such an alternate version of reality, people that prefer to blame others for their mistakes or misfortunes or their circumstances in life? The people who never take responsibility for their own actions? How does one deal with people like this?

Very simply ……. You have to let go. You have to realize that you cannot control others. You have to realize that you cannot control what someone else says and does. You can only control and change your reactions to what others say and do.

In my case I felt an enormous sadness at watching a human being in such a state of irrational belief, anger and blame, fear really, that controls all this persons actions. Fear that if they really look at what is happening around them, what is happening inside them, they won’t be able to handle it. Ultimately, fear of facing their own failures. I was overwhelmed with sadness for this person, it is a hard thing to witness in another human being, whether friend or foe.

When we were born, we were all fearless. At the exact moment of our birth, we were truly fearless. As infants, we were perfect as we were still connected to the forces that created the world. As we age, we have all adopted fears from the world around us. We want to “fit in” and be “like everyone else” and so we model our own role models, often this is our parents.

We take on their fears, limiting beliefs and false assumptions. We pick up more of these fears, limiting beliefs and false assumptions as we move through life and connect with the world around us. We’re like a sponge, absorbing these things when in fact we need to wring out that sponge and rid ourselves of these toxic beliefs and assumptions. In fact, we need to toss out that sponge and get in touch with our own inner voice and inner being.
We need to go back and explore the source of all our fears and work through them so that they are no longer a part of our personal psyche so that we can truly know ourself. So that YOU can then answer the question, “WHO ARE YOU?”

We all have our personal destiny in this world. Until we have freed ourselves of our fears, faced them and understand where they come from, take ownership for ourselves and our actions, past, present and future, our true destiny will not show itself to us. Work on your own personal “self-relationship” and once you know yourself, your destiny will find you.

No truer words were spoken when Woodrow Wilson said:

”You are here not merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand.”

Work on your own self-relationship, forgive others and let go. The universe will provide when you are ready. You are exactly where you need to be today, allow and learn from the experience.

Stress! Do You Relate to That Word?

I wonder if you can relate to that one word!  What pictures does it bring to mind for you?

One of the most common complaints people have is that they have and they are under so much stress.  I’m sure you hear this every day, I know I do!  Of course they all believe that is a negative thing.  This is not always the case.

Stress can actually be good for you.  Some stress is normal and useful and in times of crisis or emergency it helps you act quickly or meet a deadline you may have.

However, if stress happens too often or last too long, it can be very dangerous to your health.  Stress is linked to headaches, stomach upset, difficulties sleeping, back pain, moodiness, tenseness and depression.

Stress weakens your immune system making it harder for you to fight off disease and making existing health conditions worse.  Over time, stress works unseen within us and harms our bodies, causing degenerative diseases, ulcers, heart disease, cancers, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and a host of other illnesses.  The effect of being overweight compounds the effects of stress further harming your health.  Poor nutrition and poor nutritional supplementation exacerbates this.

Stress is a matter of perception.  What one person believes to be stressful may be seen as perfectly normal for someone else.  How you view a situation determines how much stress it causes you, meaning only you can evaluate the amount of stress in your life and learn better ways to cope with it.

Everyone has a choice in how they react and perceive situations.  It’s up to you to make the decision to make the necessary changes in your life.  It really is easy enough to do, the toughest part is making the decision to actually make some changes.

You can make positive changes and decrease your stress by scheduling and prioritizing, by getting plenty of rest, eating well, drinking responsibly and not smoking, exercising, joining a yoga group or taking up meditation, learning to say no and implementing some boundaries in your life.  Nourishing your cells at the cellular level is an optimal way of maintaining your health and well-being, giving you more energy and vitality and over time, healing your body from within.  View my website if you wish to learn more about the number one rated nutritional supplementation program in North America.

Remember to alleviate stress, pamper yourself, relax your body using breathing techniques, exercise or dance, listen to soothing music, live in the present, the ‘now’, and laugh.  Above all, life is to be lived and enjoyed to its fullest!

Live With Kindness……

Even a small kindness can have a big impact.

Because kindness, once it is given, takes on a life of its own.

Even a small kindness can reach far, far beyond you.

Because kindness is multiplied as time goes on.

Do you want to quickly and profoundly change your world for the better?

Kindness is a powerful way to make that happen.

No, not every kindness you give will be immediately appreciated or acknowledged or passed along.

Yet genuine kindness is impossible to deny, and even when it seems to accomplish nothing, kindness does indeed have an impact.

In fact, the less effective kindness seems to be at first, the longer and more profoundly its power will be felt.

For in one way or another, kindness always makes a difference.

Live with kindness and you live with strength, with confidence, with positive effectiveness.

Live with kindness and you make your world a better place to be.
